Datemi un libro storico che parla di quelle donne che sono passate nell’ombra della storia e io ci metto la firma. Ma si puรฒ sempre far di meglio e quando ho scoperto che questo รจ ambientato a Venezia, non ho potuto fare a meno di essere catturata del tutto! Sono un po’ di parte, dato che Venezia รจ stata la mia casa per qualche anno, ma vederla nei suoi panni del 1700 e tramite gli occhi di una orfana รจ sicuramente piรน suggestivo e con un altro effetto.

Ma cos’abbiamo davvero davanti? Questa รจ la storia di Anna Maria della Pietร , un’orfana con apparentemente niente aspettative di vita, nessuna possibilitร di aspirare a qualcosa di buono per sรฉ ma che si rivela essere un piccolo prodigio della musica e questo la porta a diventare la protetta di Antonio Vivaldi.
La piรน grossa difficoltร per l’autrice, probabilmente, รจ basare il tutto su persone realmente esistite e riuscire a dare credibilitร alla storia. Richiede studio e ricerca, precisione e veridicitร , quindi bisogna stare molto attenti nel camminare su quel filo che divide la realtร dalla finzione. Personalmente, ho trovato il tutto molto bilanciato.
La cosa interessante รจ che Anna Maria non รจ la classica protagonista sdolcinata e perfetta. No, lei รจ una bambina, ragazza e poi donna che รจ stata forgiata da una vita difficile e, per questo, affronta le cose a modo suo. ร una persona che ha a cuore i suoi amici e che sa quello che vuole, sebbene debba affrontare decisioni difficili e dove riporre la sua fiducia. Con lei viviamo uno spaccato di storia, vivendo attraverso di lei la realtร difficile che le donne vivevano all’epoca. Vivere all’ombra di uomini che si ritengono piรน grandi e piรน meritevoli di loro.
Harriet ha anche una buona capacitร descrittiva e per questo รจ facile perdersi tra le calli di Venezia e lasciarsi trasportare indietro nel tempo. Passeggiando e ammirando suoni e colori dell’epoca. E questo si unisce ad una narrazione completa a tutto tondo, ricca di sfumature, pathos, argomenti delicati ed importanti con sfondo la musica.
P.s.: l’edizioni in foto รจ quella in originale in inglese, ma per chi volesse leggerlo in italiano… buone notizie! Piemme l’ha appena pubblicato con il titolo “L’Orfana di Venezia”.

Give me a historical book that talks about those women who have passed into the shadow of history and I will sign it. But you can always do better and when I discovered that this is set in Venice, I couldn't help but be completely captured! I'm a little biased, since Venice was my home for a few years, but seeing it in its 1700s guise and through the eyes of an orphan is certainly more suggestive and with a different effect.

But what do we really have before us? This is the story of Anna Maria della Pietร , an orphan with apparently no expectations in life, no possibility of aspiring to something good for herself but who turns out to be a small musical prodigy and this leads her to become Antonio Vivaldi's protรฉgรฉ.
The biggest difficulty for the author, probably, is basing everything on real people and being able to give credibility to the story. It requires study and research, precision and truthfulness, so you have to be very careful in walking that line that divides reality from fiction. Personally, I found it all very balanced.
The interesting thing is that Anna Maria is not the classic sappy and perfect protagonist. No, she is a child, a girl and then a woman who has been shaped by a difficult life and, for this reason, faces things in her own way. She is a person who cares about her friends and who knows what she wants, although she has to face difficult decisions and where to place her trust. With her we live a cross-section of history, experiencing through her the difficult reality that women lived at the time. Living in the shadow of men who consider themselves older and more deserving than them.
Harriet also has a good descriptive ability and for this reason it is easy to get lost in the streets of Venice and be transported back in time. Walking and admiring the sounds and colors of the time. And this is combined with a complete all-round narration, full of nuances, pathos, delicate and important topics with music as a backdrop.
P.s.: the edition in the photo is the original one in English, but for those who want to read it in Italian... good news! Piemme has just published it with the title “L’Orfana di Venezia”.
