Sei un’orfana e pure una Kin (in pratica un’umana), hai passato tutta la tua vita a lavorare nei terreni che i fae hanno concesso all’uomo che si è sempre preso cura di te. Lo hai fatto con la consapevolezza che al compiere dei 21 anni un nobile fae, della Shadow Court o della Light Court, sarebbe venuto a prelevarti per portarti via per essere al suo servizio. Ti sei sempre opposta a questo ma sai anche che non ci puoi fare nulla, i fae hanno il potere. Ma proprio quel giorno, oltre a ciò che temevi, si presenta alla tua porta anche un altro fae, uno che dice di essere un insegnante dell’Accademia della Light Court, e tu dovrai andare con lei perché gli Dei ti hanno scelta e che, in parte, sei una fae della luce.

A quel punto, Aelia – la nostra protagonista – si ritrova catapultata in un mondo a lei completamente sconosciuto, dove vige la regola del più forte e niente può essere dato per scontato. L’Accademia più importante della Corte della Luce, luogo che forgia i guerrieri più forti e spietati del regno, è la sua nuova casa ed è il luogo dove imparerà a combattere contro la Corte delle Ombre.

Nel cercare di sopravvivere a questi cambiamenti folli della sua vita, Aelia dovrà trovare tutta la forza e il coraggio che nasconde dentro di lei. Dovrà imparare a combattere contro i nemici del regno, ad utilizzare poteri che non sapeva di avere e, allo stesso tempo, difendersi dai compagni che la credono inferiore solo per le sue orecchie tonde e la sua natura Kin.

Con l’appoggio di amici inaspettati e di Reign, quell’insegnante che è ormai la sua ombra, Aelia inizierà un percorso di riscoperta, sia di se stessa che di ciò che la circonda, capendo che il mondo è molto più grande e diverso da quello che aveva sempre immaginato. Inizierà anche ad intraprendere un cammino di esplorazione di quello che non si era mai concessa prima, i sentimenti. E se l’amicizia le riesce abbastanza facile da gestire, quello che prova per Reign è tutta un’altra storia. Dopotutto, tra tutti quelli verso cui poteva provare qualcosa, perché proprio l’irrangiungibile e vietatissimo insegnante? Che, tra l'altro, è anche un fae della Corte dell’Ombra?

In Crown Of Light And Shadows c’è molto su cui riflettere, oltre alla riscoperta di se stessi e ciò che siamo davvero in grado di fare, c’è anche l’importanza dell’amicizia e della famiglia, anche quando non si tratta di quella di sangue… ma soprattutto, che più impariamo e più capiamo che non si finirà mai, perché niente è mai come sembra e c’è sempre qualcosa nell’ombra, che si nasconde ed attende il suo momento.

L’apparenza inganna e spesso la fiducia viene tradita, anche da coloro che sembravano poter essere il nostro punto fermo. Ma cosa fare quando sono proprio loro a farci del male? A mentirci? Anche quando sono stati costretti?
