Questo è il secondo libro che leggo di Tijan e, se il primo mi era piaciuto moltissimo, di questo me ne sono davvero innamorata. Non si tratta esattamente di un libricino, ma vi posso assicurare che ogni pagina è meritata. Potremmo considerarlo uno sport romance, ma in realtà nasconde molto di più. Perché?
Beh, abbiamo Willow (o Billie) - la nostra protagonista – che ha passato la sua vita a cercare di tenere un profilo basso e con una paura costante. Perché lei è l’unica sopravvissuta di un famoso serial k1ller, e questo le ha gettato addosso una luce cupa e triste, oltre che ad una notorietà indesiderata, fin da bambina. Un giorno, finalmente decide di accettare una delle numerose proposte d’intervista, e sarà proprio presso lo studio televisivo che incontrerà il famoso Brett Brodou, giocatore di football per una grande squadra. Quello che sembra essere un incontro fortuito, in realtà si rivelerà essere una miccia per i sentimenti di entrambi e, a sua volta, sarà quella scossa che li aiuterà ad uscire da dietro quel muro in cui si erano auto-nascosti.
Anche se l’attrazione è stata un po’ veloce tra i due, è stata descritta come una sorta di amore a prima vista, e comunque questo non ha impattato sul rapporto tra i due. Ho amato come Billie e Brett fossero due facce della stessa medaglia ma anche totalmente agli opposti. Un po’ una sorta di yin e yang che si bilanciano a vicenda. Ma soprattutto ho adorato il senso di appartenenza che sentono, il desiderio di proteggere l’altro e come si sono spronati l’un l’altro nei momenti di crisi e in quelli di titubanza.
L’altra parola chiave della storia è FAMIGLIA.
Billie è cresciuta senza la sua famiglia di sangue, è stata sfortunata all’interno del sistema di affido, finché non è arrivata all’interno di una famiglia che voleva davvero prendersi cura di lei. È bellissimo come i signori che l’hanno presa con loro l’abbiano sempre trattata come una figlia di sangue, esattamente come la loro “vera” figlia. Anche se lei, in tutti quegli anni, ha sempre cercato di non pensare a loro come la sua famiglia, per la troppa paura di perdere anche loro. Ma sia i genitori che la sorella hanno perseverato a comportarsi con lei come tali e a farla sentire importante, finché non ha ceduto ai suoi veri sentimenti e li ha finalmente chiamati tali.
Similarmente, Brett ha tenuto alla larga tutto e tutti, un po’ per scappare dal suo oscuro passato e da quella famiglia di sangue che decisamente non si comporta come tale ma che, anzi, ha sempre cercato di sfruttarlo nel più vile dei modi. Però Brett scoprirà a sua volta che spesso le persone che più tengono a te, sono proprio lì accanto, pronti ad aiutare nel momento del bisogno.
Il tutto viene condito con un pizzico di suspense. Riuscirà Brett a risolvere con la sua famiglia? E cosa ne sarà di Billie quando una nuova e reale minaccia sembra convinta a voler distruggere quel leggero equilibrio che si era creata con tanta fatica?

This is the second book by Tijan that I have read and, if I liked the first one very much, I really fell in love with this one. It's not exactly a little book, but I can assure you that every page is deserved. We could consider it a sports romance, but in reality, it hides much more. Why?
Well, we have Willow (or Billie) – our protagonist – who has spent her life trying to keep a low profile and in constant fear. Because she is the only survivor of a famous serial k1ller, and this has cast a dark and sad light on her, as well as unwanted notoriety, since she was a child. One day, she finally decides to accept one of the numerous interview proposals, and it will be at the television studio that she will meet the famous Brett Brodou, football player for a big team. What seems to be a fortuitous meeting, in reality will turn out to be a fuse for the feelings of both and, in turn, will be that shock that will help them come out from behind that wall in which they had hidden themselves.
Although the attraction was a bit quick between the two, it was described as a sort of love at first sight, and in any case, this did not impact the relationship between the two. I loved how Billie and Brett were two sides of the same coin but also completely opposites. A bit of a sort of yin and yang that balance each other. But above all I loved the sense of belonging they felt, the desire to protect each other and how they encouraged each other in moments of crisis and in moments of hesitation.
The other key word in the story is FAMILY.
Billie grew up without her blood family, she was unlucky in the foster care system, until she came into a family that really wanted to take care of her. It's beautiful how the gentlemen who took her in have always treated her like a blood daughter, exactly like their "real" daughter. Even though, in all those years, she always tried not to think of them as her family, out of too much fear of losing them too. But both her parents and her sister persisted in acting as such towards her and making her feel important, until she gave in to her true feelings and finally called them such.
Similarly, Brett has kept everything and everyone away, partly to escape from his dark past and from that blood family that does not behave as such but which, on the contrary, has always tried to exploit him in the vilest of ways. But Brett will in turn discover that often the people who care about you most are right there next to you, ready to help in times of need.
Everything is seasoned with a pinch of suspense. Will Brett be able to resolve things with his family? And what will become of Billie when a new and real threat seems convinced that she wants to destroy the light balance that she had worked so hard to create?
