📚 RECENSIONE

📚 ENGLISH REVIEW

Sophie St. Germain returns to captivate us with her new Zeal of the North saga—a dark romantasy directly inspired by the author’s own heritage. Indeed, the first thing that stands out is the Viking setting and the wealth of references to Norse mythology.

Elvara Sweengard is the village chieftain’s daughter; as such, she had few responsibilities beyond the expectation of marriage. However, when a mysterious event claims the lives of her father and brother, she decides to roll up her sleeves and fight to save her village and its people. She does so even while facing every challenge the military academy throws her way—all without possessing any powers, and against the backdrop of a general expectation that her brother should have been the one in her place.

The only way to regain her powers and save those she holds dear is to pass all the academy’s trials and earn the favor of the Gods. Yet, things go awry along the way; the balance of power shifts, and Elvara’s plan is irrevocably ruined. Fortunately, she isn't the type of girl to wallow in self-pity; instead, she seeks a solution—even if it leads her down an unexpected path. A path that could take her far or lead to her ultimate undoing.

Darke finds himself inadvertently bound to our protagonist. We get to know his outward persona—the somewhat gruff, ruthless side he shows the world—but gradually, we peel back the layers he wears like armor. We look deeper, discovering sides of him he had kept hidden or didn't even know he possessed, including an innate ability to empathize with and understand others—especially Elvara. It is precisely this connection that drives them both to bring out the best in each other, despite their initial hostility.

An honorable mention goes to the sentient ships. Yes, you read that right: here, the ships have minds of their own and possess incredible abilities. They know how to make themselves understood and even manage to elicit a smile or two along the way. Pay close attention to them, because they are more important than they might seem!

This is definitely the book for you if you’re looking for a story that blends magic with an academic setting; if you enjoy tropes like "enemies-to-lovers" and "slow-burn" romance; if strong female leads willing to make sacrifices are right up your alley; and if dark, mysterious atmospheres don’t scare you off.
