BbtSM è il primo romanzo di Hannah Haze che io abbia mai letto, ed è anche il primo della trilogia “Bonds of Silver & Spell”.
Si tratta di un romantasy dalle tinte un po’ dark (ma senza esagerare!) e che vede protagonista l’eterna guerra tra i maghi e i mutaforma.
Da una parte abbiamo Elara, un’orfana che ha combattuto con le unghie e con i denti per riuscire ad entrare nella più famosa accademia militare per maghi e per guadagnarsi il titolo di cadetta d’élite. Tutto questo per avere la possibilità di potersi vendicare di quelle creature che le hanno strappato la famiglia e che l’hanno portata a crescere in un orfanotrofio come una sorte di scarto della società.
Ed è proprio durante una di queste sanguinose battaglie che Elara che il suo destino si incrocia con quello di Rhydian, l’Alpha di un grande branco di mutaforma. Si potrebbe pensare che il primo istinto di un Alpha sia quello di scontrarsi con il suo nemico in una feroce battaglia ma qualcosa scatta in lui e, nel tentativo di salvarle la vita, la morde segnandola come sua Compagna. Un ruolo pericoloso per entrambi, ma specialmente per lei, perché ora deve nasconderlo all’Accademia o rischia di essere additata come traditrice.
Quello dove si trovano entrambi ora è un equilibrio precario, una situazione difficile e allo stesso tempo sconosciuta. Rhydian ha commesso l’impensabile ed Elara deve fare fronte a dei cambiamenti fisici e psicologici che non passeranno inosservati alle persone che la circondano, persone che non vedono l’ora che lei faccia un passo falso per rubarle il titolo. Ma oltre a questo, ci sono altre forze in gioco, qualcuno che sembra essere molto interessato a questo nuovo ed inaspettato legame, qualcuno che non è detto che sia solo incuriosito ma che, forse, vuole trarne vantaggio.
Quando a portarla avanti c’era solo un unico grande scopo nella vita e questo viene compromesso in tal modo, gli equilibri vengono spezzati, le convinzioni cedono e una nuova realtà prende forma davanti agli occhi di tutte le persone coinvolte. Tra giochi di potere, un filone romantico complesso e fuori dalle righe e persone che agiscono nell’ombra e con una morale alquanto discutibile, la nostra protagonista avrà un bel da fare per mantenere la sua sanità mentale. Però non è detto che tutto ciò sia venuto per nuocerle, non sa ancora se combattere questo legame la riporterà sulla sua strada o le farà solo del male. Quello che è certo è che avrà una lunga strada ancora da percorrere, segreti da scoprire e legami da esplorare.

BbtSM is the first novel by Hannah Haze I’ve ever read, and it is also the first in the "Bonds of Silver & Spell" trilogy.
It is a romantasy with slightly dark undertones (though not excessively so!) that centers on the eternal war between mages and shapeshifters.
On one side, we have Elara, an orphan who fought tooth and nail to gain entry into the most prestigious military academy for mages and earn the title of elite cadet. She did all this for a chance to exact revenge on the creatures that tore her family away from her and left her to grow up in an orphanage—treated like a societal outcast.
It is during one of these bloody battles that Elara’s destiny crosses paths with Rhydian, the Alpha of a large shapeshifter pack. One might assume an Alpha’s first instinct would be to clash with his enemy in a fierce fight, but something shifts within him; in an attempt to save her life, he bites her, marking her as his Mate. It is a dangerous role for both of them—but especially for her—as she must now hide this bond from the Academy or risk being branded a traitor.
They now find themselves in a precarious balance—a difficult and uncharted situation. Rhydian has done the unthinkable, and Elara must contend with physical and psychological changes that won't go unnoticed by those around her—people who are eagerly waiting for her to make a misstep so they can snatch her title away. But beyond this, other forces are at play—someone who seems deeply interested in this new, unexpected bond; someone who may be driven by more than mere curiosity, perhaps seeking to turn the situation to their own advantage.
When a single, overriding life purpose is compromised in such a way, the status quo shatters, convictions crumble, and a new reality takes shape before the eyes of everyone involved. Amidst power struggles, a complex and unconventional romance, and shadowy figures with questionable morals, our protagonist will have her work cut out for her just to keep her sanity intact. Yet, this turn of events may not necessarily be for the worse; she does not yet know whether fighting this bond will steer her back onto her true path or simply cause her harm. What is certain is that a long journey lies ahead—filled with secrets to uncover and connections to explore.
