Ormai credo che Abby sia una di quelle autrici che leggerei in automatico. Dopo tre saghe amate alla follia, penso sia piuttosto evidente e ora l’autrice torna a conquistarmi con una nuova storia dedicata alla Formula 1!
Qui seguiamo le vicende di Evangeline e come cerca di ricostruire la sua vita dalle ceneri di una relazione tossica, che l’ha resa un’ombra di se stessa e che l’ha fatta sentire un peso. Ma proprio quando sembra toccare il punto più basso, ecco che davanti a lei si presenta nel modo più inaspettato un uomo che, già in pochi gesti e senza conoscerla, la fa sentire più sicura e meritevole di affetto. Se non fosse che… Alaric è il capo di Granata, una delle case automobilistiche che gareggiano, e il padre del suo ex!
Alaric sembra riempire tutti quei vuoti e quelle insicurezze che il suo ex ha aperto, prima offrendole un lavoro che potrebbe beneficiare entrambi e poi a livello più personale e psicologico. Sebbene i due uomini condividano lo stesso cognome, non potrebbero essere più diversi, uno apre le ferite e l’altro le chiude, curandole e andando oltre.
Evan piano piano riprende conoscenza di se stessa, del suo valore… e soprattutto non si lascia più schiacciare, non si sente più inferiore per le sue differenze, mentre Alaric prende la neuro-divergenza di lei come qualcosa di speciale e prezioso. E lei riesce a far battere il cuore di quell’uomo che non credeva di esserne capace, non davvero, e ha riempito la sua vita di colori, facendogli notare che non esiste solo la squadra e il lavoro.
Due cose ho apprezzato particolarmente, la prima è la rappresentazione della neuro-divergenza di Evangeline nella vita quotidiana, cosa comporta e cosa le costa, ma anche di come lei abbia preso la sua diversità e l’abbia resa una cosa di cui andare fiera e da creare addirittura un lavoro intorno ad essa, improntato ad aiutare altri come lei. La seconda cosa è come Alaric ed Evangeline si completino e si bilancino a vicenda, ognuno ha la capacità di illuminare ed amplificare le parti migliori dell’altro, oltre ad essere un supporto nei momenti difficili. Riescono a trasmettere emozioni e forza all’altro, spronandolo a fare ancora meglio in tutto ciò che amano, passioni e hobby compresi.
Alaric ed Evangeline ci insegnano che una relazione non ti spegne, ma ti accende e che nessuna delle due parti deve sacrificare una parte di sé a beneficio dell’altro.
By now I think Abby is one of those authors I'd automatically read. After three beloved series, I think it's pretty clear, and now the author has won me over again with a new story about Formula 1!
Here we follow Evangeline as she tries to rebuild her life from the ashes of a toxic relationship, which has left her a shadow of her former self and made her feel like a burden. But just when she seems to be at her lowest point, a man unexpectedly appears before her, one who, with just a few gestures and without even knowing her, makes her feel more secure and worthy of affection. Except... Alaric is the boss of Granata, one of the racing car manufacturers, and the father of her ex!
Alaric seems to fill all the voids and insecurities her ex has left, first by offering her a job that could benefit them both, and then on a more personal and psychological level. Although the two men share the same last name, they couldn't be more different; one opens wounds and the other closes them, healing them and moving on.
Evan slowly regains awareness of herself, of her value... and above all, she no longer lets herself be crushed, she no longer feels inferior because of her differences, while Alaric embraces her neurodivergence as something special and precious. And she manages to make the heart of that man who didn't believe he was capable of it beat, not really, and she has filled his life with color, making him see that there's more to it than teamwork and work.
I particularly appreciated two things: the first is the portrayal of Evangeline's neurodivergence in everyday life, what it entails and what it costs her, but also how she has embraced her diversity and made it something to be proud of, even creating a career around it, aimed at helping others like her. The second thing is how Alaric and Evangeline complement and balance each other. Each has the ability to illuminate and amplify the other's best parts, as well as being a support in difficult times. They are able to convey emotion and strength to each other, encouraging them to do even better in everything they love, including their passions and hobbies.
Alaric and Evangeline teach us that a relationship doesn't turn you off, but turns you on, and that neither party should sacrifice a part of themselves for the benefit of the other.
