Quando ho visto che Ketley avrebbe pubblicato una nuova saga la mia curiosità è schizzata alle stelle! Avevo già letto un paio delle sue serie precedenti e le avevo amate alla follia, ma vederla in panni più fantasy mi ha intrigato ancor di più. Devo dire che ne sono piacevolmente sorpresa, perché ha saputo tenere botta anche in queste vesti senza perdere la sua immancabile nota dark.

 

Siamo subito traspostati nel mondo di Velhoria, un regno dove vivono creature oscure, dove alcuni umani nascono con poteri soprannaturali e spaventosi, incompresi dai più. Il mondo magico è molto complesso ed inizialmente non è semplicissimo destreggiarsi, ma credo che questo sia parzialmente voluto, per far si che ci sia un’aura di mistero che circonda sia il regno che i personaggi. Verily è una ragazza che ha passato la sua vita in un paese ai confini dell’impero ma, nel suo piccolo, stava relativamente bene… fin quando un evento ha scatenato l’emergere dei suoi poteri di Soulren. Ha sempre vissuto con la consapevolezza che le persone con questi poteri sono pericolose e da evitare a tutti i costi, inoltre girano voci poco piacevoli sul loro destino una volta che oltrepassano le porte dell’Accademia. Farà di tutto per nascondersi, ma qualcuno la osserva da lontano e ha il compito di prenderla e portarla tra le mura di quell’istituto che tanto vuole evitare.

 

Da qua non vi dico altro sulla trama, troppo complessa per poter essere spiegata in breve e vi perdereste tutto il meglio. Ma vi basti sapere che Verily non è la classica protagonista predestinata che accetta un po’ passivamente il suo ruolo, ma anzi, lo combatte con le unghie e con i denti, compie errori che hanno anche grosse conseguenze, ma cerca di imparare da essi anche se non sempre le riesce bene. L’importante è che cerca sempre di agire per il meglio, sforzandosi di rimanere se stessa e di non lasciarsi sopraffare da coloro che vogliono cambiarla. Come cerca anche di comprendere Falcen, quel ragazzo che l’ha presa per portarla via, poi costretto ad essere la sua ombra e il suo insegnante. Ma Falcen è un ragazzo complesso, ricco di sfaccettature, prima la protegge e poi la allontana, e ancora e ancora. Verily non ci casca e scava finchè non trova la vera essenza di quel ragazzo piegato, con un fardello più grande di lui e con l’unico desiderio di essere libero, in un senso o nell’altro.

 

Questa è una storia che fa male, che parla di destino, di come spesso la vita ci metta davanti ad un percorso duro e pieno di sfide, di quanto a volte ci troviamo addosso etichette e compiti che non abbiamo richiesto ma che dobbiamo comunque portare avanti. Impariamo anche qual è il significato del sacrificio e della rassegnazione, di quanto a volte il dolore è talmente forte che si desidera solo smettere di sentirlo… ma a volte c’è qualcuno di abbastanza speciale da farci desiderare di tirare avanti ancora un po’, solo un po’, per poter proteggere e assicurarsi il benessere di quella persona, anche al costo della nostra vita.

 

Resonance è questo ma anche tanto altro, troppo da raccontare in poche righe, ma vi posso assicurare che ne vale davvero la pena. Ogni personaggio ha un suo perché, ma Verily e Falcen non possono fare altro che entrarvi sottopelle e portarvi con loro in avventure e battaglie grandiose, alla ricerca della felicità, della libertà e del vero io. Preparatevi anche un enorme pacco di fazzoletti, perché alla fine vi ritroverete a piangere come bambini, singhiozzando a tutto spiano, per colpa di quel cliffhanger che oserei definire pressoché illegale.

When I saw Ketley was publishing a new saga, my curiosity skyrocketed! I'd already read a couple of her previous series and loved them, but seeing her in a more fantasy-themed guise intrigued me even more. I must say I'm pleasantly surprised, because she's managed to hold her own even in this guise without losing her trademark dark edge.

We're immediately transported to the world of Velhoria, a kingdom inhabited by dark creatures, where some humans are born with supernatural and terrifying powers, misunderstood by most. The magical world is very complex and initially challenging to navigate, but I think this is partly intentional, to ensure an aura of mystery surrounds both the kingdom and the characters. Verily is a girl who has spent her life in a village on the edge of the empire but, in her own small way, was relatively well off... until an event triggered the emergence of her Soulren powers. She's always lived with the knowledge that people with these powers are dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. There are also unpleasant rumors about their fate once they pass the Academy's doors. She'll do everything she can to hide, but someone is watching her from afar and has the task of catching her and bringing her within the walls of the institution she so desperately wants to avoid.

I won't tell you anything else about the plot from here, as it's too complex to explain briefly and you'd miss out on all the best parts. But suffice it to say that Verily isn't the typical predestined protagonist who passively accepts her role. Instead, she fights it tooth and nail, making mistakes that sometimes have serious consequences, but trying to learn from them, even if she doesn't always succeed. The important thing is that she always tries to do what's best, striving to remain herself and not allow herself to be overwhelmed by those who want to change her. Just as Falcen, the boy who took her away and was then forced to be her shadow and her teacher, also tries to understand. But Falcen is a complex boy, full of nuances. First he protects her, then he pushes her away, over and over again. Verily doesn't fall for it and digs deep until she finds the true essence of that broken boy, burdened by a burden greater than himself and with the sole desire to be free, in one sense or another.

This is a painful story, about destiny, about how life often presents us with a difficult and challenging path, about how sometimes we find ourselves burdened with labels and tasks we didn't ask for but must carry on anyway. We also learn the meaning of sacrifice and resignation, about how sometimes the pain is so strong that we just want to stop feeling it... but sometimes there's someone special enough to make us want to carry on a little longer, just a little longer, to protect and ensure that person's well-being, even at the cost of our own lives.

Resonance is this, but also so much more, too much to tell in a few lines, but I can assure you it's truly worth it. Each character has their own unique appeal, but Verily and Falcen can't help but get under your skin and take you with them on grandiose adventures and battles, in search of happiness, freedom, and your true self. Prepare a huge pack of tissues, too, because by the end, you'll find yourself crying like a baby, sobbing your heart out, thanks to that cliffhanger that I'd dare call practically illegal.
