Scrivere questa recensione non è semplicissimo, in generale posso dire di aver apprezzato la storia ma ci sono alcuni aspetti che avrei apprezzato di più se gestiti in modo diverso.

Quello che abbiamo davanti può essere quasi considerato un retelling e anche un fantasy romance. C’è la principessa Aisling, erede al trono e costretta a sposare Simon, insieme dovrebbero avere la capacità di salvare il regno. Ma nessuno prende in considerazione i desideri e i sentimenti della principessa, neanche il suo stesso padre. Mentre Simon si può definire come un arrampicatore sociale con intenzioni non proprie limpide, aiutato dalla propria madre pronta a tutto pur di ottenere quello che vuole, anche ricorrere a minacce e sotterfugi.

Poi c’è Finn, un reietto e cresciuto sulle strade, la cui unica famiglia sono altri ragazzi come lui, uniti dalla vita e non dal sangue. Un ragazzo come lui non dovrebbe neanche condividere la stessa aria di una principessa, ma il destino vuole che siano legati da un legame che trascende il tempo e lo spazio.

Sono twin flames, ma mentre Finn accetta subito questo legame e lo fa proprio, Aisling ha bisogno di tempo per riflettere e capire se crederci o meno, anche quando sente il richiamo di questa connessione. Ho apprezzato certamente che lei non sia immediatamente caduta ai suoi piedi, dopotutto non si conoscono, ma ho altrettanto apprezzato che Finn abbia subito desiderato proteggerla, soprattutto da un destino che lei non ha mai voluto, e non gli importa come può salvarla, deve farlo e basta. Sono due testoni che non mollano l’osso, ognuno mosso da motivi diversi quanto validi.

Il contrasto dei due personaggi è un’altra cosa che mi è piaciuta. Lui è un ragazzo che vive ai margini della società, considerato meno di niente e ricorre ad ogni mezzo per sopravvivere, ma farebbe anche qualsiasi cosa per il bene della sua “famiglia” e ora anche di Aisling. Se lui è pienamente consapevole della vita del popolo, lei ne è lontana anni luce, costretta nella prigione d’oro del suo castello, isolata dal mondo esterno, poco consapevole di quello che accade veramente oltre le alte mura che la circondano.

Tra intrighi di vario genere, nemici più vicini di quanto si pensi, qualche maledizione qua e là, i nostri due beniamini avranno molto su cui lavorare oltre ai loro sentimenti. Dovranno imparare a tirarsi su le maniche per poter essere e vivere come vogliono.

Sono due le cose che mi sento di appuntare. La prima è che all’inizio ho fatto un po’ fatica ad empatizzare coi personaggi, ma la cosa si riduce andando avanti. L’altra è che forse avrei preferito qualche paginetta in più dedicata alla conclusione. Viene praticamente risolto tutto, ma sono curiosa di natura e non mi sarebbero dispiaciute qualche curiosità in più.

Writing this review isn't exactly easy. Overall, I can say I enjoyed the story, but there are some aspects I would have appreciated more if handled differently.

What we have before us could almost be considered a retelling and even a fantasy romance. There's Princess Aisling, heir to the throne and forced to marry Simon; together, they should have the ability to save the kingdom. But no one takes the princess's desires and feelings into consideration, not even her own father. Meanwhile, Simon can be described as a social climber with shady intentions, aided by his mother, who is willing to do anything to get what she wants, even resorting to threats and subterfuge.

Then there's Finn, an outcast who grew up on the streets, whose only family are other kids like him, united by life, not blood. A boy like him shouldn't even share the same air as a princess, but fate wills that they are bound by a bond that transcends time and space.

They're twin flames, but while Finn immediately accepts this bond and makes it his own, Aisling needs time to reflect and decide whether to believe in it or not, even when she feels the pull of this connection. I certainly appreciated that she didn't immediately fall at his feet—after all, they don't know each other—but I equally appreciated that Finn immediately wanted to protect her, especially from a fate she never wanted, and he doesn't care how he can save her, he just has to do it. They're two stubborn men who don't give up, each driven by different yet valid reasons.

The contrast between the two characters is another thing I liked. He's a boy who lives on the margins of society, considered less than nothing and resorting to any means to survive, but he would also do anything for the good of his "family," and now also of Aisling. While he is fully aware of the lives of the common people, she is light years away from it, confined to the golden prison of her castle, isolated from the outside world, barely aware of what really happens beyond the high walls that surround her.

Between various intrigues, enemies closer than you might think, and a few curses here and there, our two favorites will have a lot to work through beyond their own feelings. They'll have to learn to roll up their sleeves to be and live as they want.

There are two things I feel I should note. The first is that I struggled to empathize with the characters at the beginning, but that eases as the story progresses. The other is that perhaps I would have preferred a few more pages dedicated to the conclusion. Practically everything is resolved, but I'm naturally curious and wouldn't have minded a little more curiosity.
